How to Use Nano-Hydroxyapatite Toothpaste: A Step-by-Step Guide

• By Jess Ortega

Switched to a nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste and wondering if you're using it "right"? Good news: you use it much like any other toothpaste. Brush twice a day for two minutes with a pea-sized amount, then spit out the excess and skip the rinse. I'm Jess, an Oral Health Therapist, and below I'll walk you through the routine step by step, plus the questions people ask me most when they make the switch.

How to use nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste: step by step

1. Choose a soft toothbrush

A soft-bristled manual brush or a powered toothbrush both work. Hard bristles and heavy pressure don't clean better; gentle and thorough is the goal.

2. Use a pea-sized amount

For adults and older kids, a pea-sized amount is plenty. For under-3s, use a smear, and supervise children until they can spit reliably. If you're not sure what suits your child's age, ask your dental professional.

3. Brush for two minutes

Use small, gentle circles on the outer and inner surfaces of every tooth, then a light back-and-forth on the chewing surfaces. Splitting your mouth into four sections of about 30 seconds each helps you cover everything.

4. Spit, don't rinse

When you're done, spit out the excess and resist rinsing with a big mouthful of water. That's the same advice we give for any toothpaste, and with Flossy & Pure it leaves your mouth feeling fresh and clean for longer.

5. Clean between your teeth once a day

Floss or interdental brushes reach the spots a toothbrush can't. Do it whenever suits you, as long as it's daily.

6. Repeat morning and night

Twice a day is the standard Australian advice for everyone. Night-time brushing is the one not to skip.

What to expect when you switch

Less foam

Many nano-hydroxyapatite toothpastes, including ours, are SLS-free, so they foam far less than you might be used to. That's normal. Foam isn't what cleans your teeth; the brushing is.

A smooth feel

Flossy & Pure contains 3% nano-hydroxyapatite, with particles around 20–40 nanometres, alongside hydrated silica, which gently polishes without harsh abrasion. Most people notice a smooth, polished feel after brushing. If you'd like to know more about the ingredient itself, read What Is Nano-Hydroxyapatite? A Plain-English Guide.

A milder taste

If you're coming from a strong mint, a mild mint can feel subtle at first. Most families, and especially kids, settle into it quickly.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using too much. More paste doesn't mean a better clean, and your tube runs out faster.
  • Scrubbing hard. Gentle pressure with good technique is what counts.
  • Rushing. Most people brush for well under two minutes. A timer or a powered brush with a built-in timer helps.
  • Rinsing straight away. Spit out the excess and leave it there.
  • Leaving the cap off. Close the tube after use and store it somewhere cool and dry.

Can the whole family use it?

Yes, that's exactly why I made Flossy & Pure: one gentle, fluoride-free formula for every brush in the house, from little ones still learning to spit through to grandparents. Adjust the amount by age and keep supervising young children. If you're unsure whether a particular toothpaste suits your family, your dental professional can advise.

How long will a tube last?

With twice-daily brushing and a pea-sized amount, a 100g tube lasts one person about 4–6 weeks. Each tube is best used within 12 months of opening, and the batch and best-before date are printed on the base. Families often keep one in each bathroom with the Family 3-Pack, or pick Subscribe & Save on the product page for 15% off regular deliveries every 4, 8, 12 or 16 weeks. Skip or cancel anytime.

When to see your dental professional

A good daily routine works best alongside regular check-ups. If you have questions about which toothpaste suits you or your family, or you notice anything that concerns you about your teeth or mouth, book in with your dentist or Oral Health Therapist. Frequently asked questions

Should I rinse after brushing with hydroxyapatite toothpaste?

Spit out the excess and skip the rinse. It's the same advice dental professionals give for toothpaste in general, and it leaves your mouth feeling fresher for longer.

How much nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste should I use?

A pea-sized amount for adults and older children, and a smear for under-3s, with an adult supervising until children can spit reliably.

Can I use nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste with an electric toothbrush?

Yes. It works with manual and powered toothbrushes. Use the same pea-sized amount.

Why doesn't my nano-hydroxyapatite toothpaste foam?

Many are SLS-free, and SLS is the ingredient that makes toothpaste foam. Less foam doesn't mean a weaker clean.

Can I use it alongside my usual toothpaste or mouthwash?

Some people do. Your dental professional is the best person to advise on a routine that suits you.
