Hydroxyapatite is the main mineral that naturally makes up tooth enamel. Nano-hydroxyapatite is a lab-made version of that same mineral, in particles small enough to help fill in microscopic gaps and weak spots on the tooth surface.
Rather than working against decay-causing bacteria the way fluoride does, it works by directly replacing lost mineral — rebuilding enamel with the same material it's already made of. It's been used in Japan as an anti-cavity ingredient since the 1980s and is now common in fluoride-free formulations across Europe, the UK, and Australia.
Several clinical studies — including an 18-month randomized controlled trial in adults and comparative trials in children — have found hydroxyapatite toothpaste performs comparably to fluoride toothpaste for preventing cavities and remineralizing early enamel damage.
It's a well-studied, legitimate alternative rather than an unproven one. As with any toothpaste, results depend on consistent brushing and overall oral care habits, so we'd always recommend talking to your dentist about what's right for your specific needs.
Some people choose fluoride-free care because of sensitivity, personal preference, or concerns about fluoride ingestion in young children who tend to swallow toothpaste.
Nano-hydroxyapatite gives you a remineralizing ingredient with a strong safety profile even if swallowed in normal brushing amounts, which is one reason it's often chosen for families with young kids. It's a personal choice, not a claim that fluoride itself is unsafe when used as directed.
Your mouth hosts a community of bacteria that, when balanced, helps protect against decay and gum disease. Many conventional toothpastes contain strong detergents (like SLS) that can strip out the good bacteria along with the bad.
A microbiome-friendly formula is designed to clean effectively without wiping out that balance — in our case, that's why we leave out SLS and add prebiotic ingredients like chicory root extract, which help feed beneficial oral bacteria rather than eliminate everything indiscriminately.
In Australia, toothpaste is generally regulated as a cosmetic product rather than a therapeutic good, unless a specific therapeutic claim (like "treats gum disease") is being made — which requires separate TGA approval.
Flossy & Pure is formulated and labelled in line with cosmetic regulations and doesn't make therapeutic claims beyond what's approved. Full details are in our Health Disclaimer.
Yes — there's no special transition process required. Most people can switch directly.
If you have specific dental concerns (active decay, high cavity risk, orthodontic work), it's worth mentioning the switch to your dentist at your next visit so they can advise based on your individual history.
Flossy & Pure was created by Jess Ortega, a Qualified and Practicing Oral Health Therapist with a Bachelor's degree from the University of Newcastle.
After years of clinical experience, she couldn't find a toothpaste she felt fully comfortable recommending to her own patients and family — one that avoided harsh detergents, respected the oral microbiome, and was backed by real ingredient research. Flossy & Pure is the result of that search.
Flossy & Pure is formulated to be safe for all ages — from a baby's very first tooth through to elderly care. It's fluoride-free and gentle enough for the whole family to share one tube.
For infants and young children, use a smear or pea-sized amount and supervise brushing.
